One of the very useful tools of my professional training is the emphasis on personal responsibility, rather than focusing on "shoulds" or what we have been told is "right". An emphasis on what we define as our responsibility makes many things so much clearer. We don't have to focus on what other people think is right or wrong but work on becoming clearer about our own beliefs. Knowing what we believe doesn't make taking new action any easier, in fact it may make it harder. But when we become aware of the anxiety that accompanies making change, we can appreciate why it is frequently so difficult to make changes.
In my work with you we learn as much as possible about your emotional patterns and what could be creating more tension and anxiety in your life. Defining your beliefs can clarify what actions you would like to take. You can't make changes unless you know as much about yourself and your emotional patterns as possible. We can't understand our patterns unless we examine them closely. We tend to make decisions under the influence of many unconscious stories. In our work together, we search for the facts; the facts that remain hidden unless we know where to look and what to look for in our history. Our current behavior and circumstances provide many clues.
I have studied the work of Murray Bowen and his Family Systems Theory for the last 15 years and use his concepts to help others learn the patterns of their lives. It is not easy work to examine our behavior and our patterns but so worth the effort. Many theories expect us to change our feelings in order to change our actions. With Bowen Theory we work to change our actions in order to change our feelings. We work with what we have direct control over.
